The boxers other secret weapon that helps them lose weight
There is one other secret weapon that a boxer also has developed that enables him/her to be able to lose weight at will… and that secret weapon is their MIND SET. (If you are wandering what the other secret is please see the previous article by clicking on the following link):
The (not so secret) secret every boxer knows about losing weight
Boxers learn from the very beginning that in order to be successful at boxing they need to train their mind to be able to overcome the signals from their brain that is telling them they are too tired or just not in the mood to train and not to give up when the going gets tough. They have developed what is known as a warrior mindset. One of the most important aspects of a boxers mindset that they have developed is SELF DISCIPLINE, which means they will do whatever they need to do in order to achieve the result they want to get, even if they do not like doing it.
There is a saying that a boxing fight is won or lost long before the boxer enters the ring, which is just as much about doing the training as it is about having the belief that they can win the fight. If a boxer has not put in the training and does not believe he can win, he has already lost. The analogy is exactly the same when it comes to weight loss.
The real barriers to weight loss – overcoming psychological blocks and creating the right mindset
The real challenge with all of this is the psychological battle you will face. Things such as changing your day to day habits, having the self discipline to choose the healthy option of food instead the quick and easy fast food option. Mentally having the desire to want to change and even on a deeper level believing that it can be possible. There may be lots of factors going on in your life that affect your lifestyle and make it hard (but not impossible) to make the changes in your life you want to achieve. These may be things such as working long hours, having kids and family to look after which all contribute to making it difficult.

There is no question of a doubt that making this change to your life is going to require one thing in huge doses…. And that is willpower!! The question is how much do you really want it?
Develop a warrior mindset
Losing weight is actually just as much about changing your mindset as it is about changing your physical weight. In order to help you achieve this goal I want you to do a bit of visualization and get that imagination activated (a key part of psychological success btw!).
I want you to think of this as the greatest most important challenge you have ever had to face in your life. Maybe even think of it as a question of life or death should you not be successful. That basically failure is not an option. You are going to have to prepare yourself for war, a war against yourself and that fat you want to lose. Mentally prepare yourself for a tough journey that is going to have lots of obstacles for you to face and overcome in order for you to be successful. But a challenge that you will willingly face. This challenge is also going to require for you to have a certain level of honesty with yourself and for you to be willing to take a long hard look in the mirror.
Building the motivation and a vision of the future – what does weight loss mean to you?
So now I would like you to do 2 different mental exercises.
- What it is that you are not happy about with yourself at the moment and why it is holding you back? Do you feel self conscious in social settings because you are overweight? Do you not feel attractive to the opposite sex? Do you lack confidence in putting your needs first? Do you suffer a lot of health problems? List as many reasons as possible
- What would your life be like if you lost the weight and got in good physical shape? How would you feel? How would your life be different? What could you go and do that you can not do at the moment?
I really want you to get a clear image in your head of how your life could be better. Not only do I want you to get a clear image in your head but I also want you to tell yourself that it is actually possible. That you WILL achieve the goals you have set and WILL be living the life you want.
It is very important because this is going to be the inspiration and the desire that provides the motivation for you to start the process of making those changes and the fuel to keep you going through the tough times.
I would like you to think of this process as one of a physical mental and emotional metamorphosis from your previous self (the caterpillar) to the new improved glorious version of yourself (the butterfly). The important thing to note however is that if you engage wholeheartedly with this part of the process, the rest will follow behind it naturally.
There is nothing magical about weight loss or weight gain. Boxers do it all the time. Bodybuilders do it all the time. Once you have the end in sight, you simply plot the route that takes you there.
The reason I call it having a warrior mindset is that sometimes there are more deep routed issues that are at play. There are going to be lots of negative thoughts about yourself and this process that are potentially going to hold you back. You have to be willing to challenge and ‘fight’ those negative thoughts when they occur so that they don’t have the power to hold you back.
Lets looks at some of the things that could potentially hold you back….
