How the course operates (Maslow’s hierarchy)
Boxing Evolution (BE) operates on the basis of two theoretical hierarchies. These are Maslow hierarchy of needs and the NLP logical levels models. Each Hierarchy consists of 6 different levels. Each level represents a different level of human development. A person will be developing at one of the levels and cannot progress until they have achieved satisfaction at that level. For example a homeless person can not think about appearance because they are too busy thinking about food and shelter.
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a theory in psychology that Abraham Maslow proposed in his 1943 paper A Theory of Human Motivation.
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is often depicted as a pyramid consisting of five levels: the four lower levels are grouped together as being associated with Physiological needs, while the top level is termed growth needs associated with psychological needs. Deficiency needs must be met first. Once these are met, seeking to satisfy growth needs drives personal growth. The higher needs in this hierarchy only come into focus when the lower needs in the pyramid are satisfied. Once an individual has moved upwards to the next level, needs in the lower level will no longer be prioritized.
Therefore from this we can deduce what we need in order to live a happy and fulfilled life.
As you can see from the diagram life will not be enjoyable unless the first three layers are satisfied.
BE meets the person at the level they are currently operating, and then guides them through the rest of the model. This may not necessarily mean in a linear fashion, due to the fact that certain levels may have been bypassed and need to be re-covered in order for there to be a correct understanding.
For adolescent males involved in Gang, gun and knife crime this level is usually one of safety. Boxing meets them at that level of need and understanding for self defence. Once trust, rapport and respect have been gained they can be guided up through the levels.
BE covers both the models firstly in terms of boxing. Once the model has been fully covered in terms of boxing, both the models are then covered in terms of overall life.
BE has modules at each of the levels of the hierarchies, for both the boxing and overall life areas.
